is a well-known plant which is being used in Indian traditional medicines for treating epilepsy, diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera
and ulcers. The methanol extract of Stereospermum chelonoides (MESC) was subjected to acute toxicity and then screened for
anti-epileptic activity on Maximal Electroshock (MES) and Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) induced seizures models in albino wistar
rats. Acute toxicity of extract was nontoxic up to the recommended dose 2000 mg/kg. p.o. Animals were treated with EESC at
doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight. Study results showed, the mean duration of extensor phase of treated groups
reduced significant level than compared to control group. In pentylenetetrazole induced seizure model, onset of myoclonic
spasm and clonic convulsion was delayed in the EESC treated groups. EESC showed anti-epileptic activity against MES and
PTZ animal models.
<Email>saravanacology@gmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>7</volume><issue>1</issue><year>2017</year><keyword>Anti-epileptic activity,Stereospermum chelonoides,Maximal Electroshock (MES),Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)</keyword><AUTHORS>A.
