SEEDS ON STREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED DIABETIC RATS</JournalTitle>
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease caused by inherited and/or acquired deficiency in the production of
insulin by the pancreas, or by the ineffectiveness of the insulin produced. Such a deficiency results in increased concentrations
of glucose in the blood. WHO estimated that approximately 58 million people would suffer with diabetes by the year of 2025
in India. Oxidative stress, produced under diabetic conditions, may cause tissue damage. Although , oral hypoglycemic
agents/insulin are the major drugs used for the treatment of diabetes. Some common drugs includes insulin, sulfonyl ureas,
biguanides and thiazolidinediones their continued use may cause unwanted side effects. The aim of the present study was to
evaluate the antidiabetic and antioxidant potential of ethanolic extract of Bambusa arundinacea (Retz.) seeds (EEBA). EEBA
was subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening, acute oral toxicity and antidiabetic study. Effect of EEBA on SGOT,
SGPT, total cholesterol, HDL, TG, total protein, creatinine, and urea in serum were studied. Antioxidant enzymes like SOD
and CAT were also studied and histopathology studies were carried out
<Email>amudha.cology@gmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>5</volume><issue>3</issue><year>2015</year><keyword>Bambusa arundinacea,Streptazotocin(STZ),antioxidant,Diabetes mellitus,antidiabetic</keyword><AUTHORS>M Thenmozhi ,P Amudha</AUTHORS><afflication>Asst.
